A Note from the Publisher: The Grocery Store Workout

By Carrie Boyle - Publisher, Macaroni Kid Buffalo Northtowns May 21, 2020

As our Macaroni Mama and amazing leader says...  Happy BLURSDAY!  After over 2 months of quarantine, home schooling, working from home, not being able to work...whatever your story is...  each day of the week essentially has become a BLUR!  (FYI - it's Thursday...I think!!)  So, Happy Blursday - everyday!

In my household I have now completed my 3rd MAJOR grocery shopping.  I've been stretching over 3 weeks on a shop so last night I laced up my sneakers, hydrated well, got ready to take all the steps, lift heavy, and get in a good sweat!  I swear it is both a mental and physical workout that begins well before putting on the mask and stepping into the grocery store!  All I do know is that my cart is very full, my bill painfully high, and my brain completely fried by the time I've put away the last items in the fridge and pantry.  Okay, okay - it's fried sooner than that!  I think I feel the wear and tear of this undertaking at about the moment I have to stop moving and stand and the end of a very long checkout like that feels even longer due to the 6 ft. spacing marked out on the stores floor.  Mentally I'm trying to plan for weeks of meals and snacks, hoping I didn't miss anything when I inventoried the kitchen before heading out, stressing I'll forgot something, and constantly being aware of my proximity to others.

On top of that, each odd encounter with other people causes my head to spin!  Yesterday I dropped an item when unloading my cart.  The nice gentleman behind me instinctively jumped forward to pick it up for me as I started to walk around my cart to do the same.  Halfway into his forward motion he paused and stepped back to his 6ft marker on the floor.  I'm sure he mouthed "sorry" as I was saying "thanks anyways" - but instead we just have to make eye contact and nod that we were on the same page.  We are a city of good neighbors so not helping others just feels odd.  This is just one example and I'm sure we all have so many more.

This week we entered Phase 1 of reopening, but I'm sure we all realize that what we know as normal may not be the same for a very long time.  I'm so glad we've come this far and very hopeful for what the coming months bring.  I'm not sure I will casually pop into the grocery store for a few quick items multiple times a week like I use to - but finding a balance between the thoughtless and over thought out trips will be nice!

I hope you all are staying safe, keeping your spirits up, and making time for YOU as we work through these crazy times!

With lots of mama love,

Carrie
