Happy Thursday! It's a snow day for most in our community. The kids of course are thrilled, but I'm sure between work arrangements and coming off a holiday week of having the littles home from school there are mixed feelings among the parents today!
Last night we were in the midst of dinner prep when the call came in. It was answered and listed to with the technology of a smart watch. Just. Like. That. Information received, a "cool." from the 8th grader, and on with the evening. As happy as I'm sure he was, I felt kind of bad for all that he was missing out on. Remember? Before there was an automatic phone call. A text. Digital media and pushed notifications to let us know our fate? The anticipation of a snow day was a celebration in itself!
I remember sitting in from of my TV. Waiting. Hoping. Crossing fingers that my school name would show up on the ticker along the bottom of the screen! Do you remember?! Turning on the TV to find that you JUST missed your schools letter of the alphabet! Oh the suspense! I was a W for Webster. I think I always seemed to tune in at the A's and B's. And then there was the dreaded letter S! This one always took so much longer to scroll by because of all the catholic schools named after what seemed like an endless list of Saints! Then, when your letter finally came back on, your school wasn't listed! But, we stuck by, didn't we! We sat through that list all over again, and again and again. We waited until our school finally made the list! It was a game! We even took a break from fighting with siblings to come together as a united front while we cheered on the snow gods!
Now, the reward is the same, yes. The process is definitely much more convenient, no doubt. But there was just something about that ticker on the tv screen that turned a snow day into an event and I'm sad this generation is missing out on the first half of the celebration!
Here's to you on this snow day. I hope the kids slept in, you've found fun ways to pass the day, and for your sake, that school is back in session tomorrow!
With lots of mama love,
Carrie
